Mike W. Krzyzewski has been the men’s basketball coach at Duke University since 1980. He has led the Blue Devils to 32 NCAA Tournament appearances, 12 Final Fours, 13 ACC Tournament championships and five NCAA championships. In January 2015, Krzyzewski beat St. John’s University to become the first Division I men’s basketball coach to reach 1,000 wins. Duke then went on to win the 2015 NCAA National Championship. In addition, Krzyzewski coaches the United States men’s national team.
Krzyzewski is also an important member of the V Foundation for Cancer Research family. Krzyzewski and Jim Valvano became close during Valvano’s battle with cancer. A member of the V Foundation Board of Directors since the Foundation’s 1993 inception, Krzyzewski has been in the forefront in the fight against cancer. He served as an Honorary Chairman of the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic for the event’s first nine years. The Krzyzewski family has also hosted the V Foundation Wine Celebration in Napa Valley.
In addition to his work with the V Foundation, Krzyzewski is Chairman of The Emily K Center, a community center named for his mother. He has served as Chairman of the Duke Children’s Miracle Network Telethon and participated in the Duke Children’s Classic. In 2000, Krzyzewski was the first recipient of the GTE Reads with the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Literacy Champion Award.
